Teacher TV ... Mobile Phones - Mobile Minds

Technology has a way of nudging forward whether you want it to or not. Teachers TV (thanks for the link Tricia) takes 'a look at the world of young people with mobile phones, and the impact on schools and education.Owning a mobile is becoming an indispensable element of young people's lives, for both teenagers and increasingly primary age children, all around the world. Are mobile phones a force for good, or an example of technology gone awry? Is it sensible to ban their use in schools or should this device be given a place in lessons and learning?'

I don't see things like mobiles as having a moral dimension.

The obvious thing to ask is "how are they used?".

If their use is accompanied by a discussion as to why they make life/study better, then the discussion in itself would be great.

My concern is when people make choices in a mindless way; just copying what their 'neighbours' do or alternately choosing to do something just to poke two fingers at what others do.

I'm all for exploring new technology but am slow to be convinced.

I could spend my life chasing new developments which would mean I wouldn't have time to enjoy throwing pebbles in a pond and watching the ripples!

Lets explore what the possible new ideas for the use of mobiles might be.

At present, I've got in the mode of popping off to check something out on Google, so if their were a computer for students to check something out in a matter of seconds -that could be great.

I'm reminded of attending lectures when my notes were full of queries about what was being said. If I could quickly check some facts and then come back immediately to the lecturer/teacher with a perceptive question that could be good.

i could perhaps use a mobile as in the quiz game to 'phone a friend' that could be good.

Eg History lesson on World War Two and i remember that I knoe someone who is alive and lived through it - i could phone him/her up and check on their version of the facts and contribute this to the lesson.

Conclusion- yes there could be great opportunities for incorporating modern 'gadgets' - let some brave creative teachers try their ideas out and develop a new direction!
