Unbelievable! The Deputy Head didn't do a good job of persuading me that this technological set up was of real educational benefit. Something alomg the lines of "it provides children with a different way to communicate, saves them passing notes to each other on a piece of paper". Amongst all that hi-tech hardware I'd be interested to know what software they use to heighten their creative potential yet further!
What can you say other than -
"The use of technology is no guarantee of good teaching"!
When will the DfES produce a white paper about when it is *not* appropriate to use ICT???
The scariest part of this seemed to be that ICT was a physical barrier to communication; and i would have thought hindered childrens' social interactions rather than stimulated them. Particularly with the desktops set up as a 'wall' to the rest of the classroom! An example of a VERY superficial short-termist's view of what technology is supposed to look like in education...
Very very scary indeed. I saw this 'live' while in a hotel room during an external examiner's visit. Hotel rooms are depressing enough at the best of times but this made it ten times worse. What have we done!
